Today’s Lie:
“One of the downsides of releasing one’s financial information is that [our tithing] is now all public, but we had never intended our contributions to be known. It’s a very personal thing between ourselves and our commitment to our God and to our church.”
So… he doesn’t want to release his tax returns because he wants to keep his tithing private? Does he really think we’re that stupid?
- He’s already released one year’s return and promised to release a second. So, with the cat already out of the bag, why would his tithing in prior years merit more “privacy”?
- If he really wants to keep it secret, he could easily redact the details of his charitable giving and just show a total. No one would know how much he gave the church.
- For the past few weeks his reason was that he didn’t want to provide Democrats with information that they would use them to attack him.
C’mon, Mitt! Gonna hide behind your religion now, huh?
Here’s the rub… this new reasoning was made public one day after leaks of Bain documents indicate Bain (and therefore Romney) used questionable and illegal tactics to avoid paying taxes. Releasing his returns would put them under scrutiny and likely force him to ammend those returns and fork over MILLIONS in unpaid taxes, interest, and penalties. That’s probably the REAL reason.
